West Ham United vs Manchester United match preview
Will Manchester United’s horrendous away record this season continue?
On Thursday night, the Red Devils were beaten 1-0 by Brighton, with a generally entertaining game producing the most dramatic of conclusions.
Just as the full time whistle was set to blow, VAR spotted a daft handball by Luke Shaw, awarded Brighton a penalty and the Seagulls duly snatched all three points.
This means, against teams currently 13th or higher, Erik ten Hag’s team have accumulated a mere six points from 11 away matches, their sole win coming in the last minute at Fulham in November.
Despite their away-day difficulties, Man United are still in fourth place, four points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand, although defeat in East London could set up a nervy conclusion to the campaign.
When facing teams 14th or below on the road, ten Hag’s side have won all six fixtures this season, and that bottom third of the table is where one will find West Ham United.
This means, despite only losing one out of six beforehand, David Moyes’ men aren’t safe yet, starting the weekend four points clear of Leeds, Leicester and Nottingham Forest.
Coming up after this, the Irons host AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final, which’ll be a huge occasion.
West Ham though will not be looking ahead to that just yet, as they seek to secure safety, and claim the scalp of Man United.
When these two clubs last met at the London Stadium, Jesse Lingard bagged the winner against his former side and Cristiano Ronaldo also scored, no… never heard of him either.
The game though is most widely remembered for the fact that Mark Noble came off the bench in the 96th minute to take a penalty, the last kick of the game, but saw it saved by David de Gea.
This clash could be equally as dramatic, given that both need points towards opposite ends of the table.
West Ham United team news
The headline team news regards a mystery illness in the camp, that saw Nayef Aguerd, Declan Rice and Tomáš Souček sent home on Wednesday morning, thereby missing the defeat at Man City.
It’ll be interesting to see if any of them feature here, with that huge clash against AZ to come in four days time.
At the back, Kurt Zouma is certainly out, having damaged ankle ligaments last weekend.
Vladimír Coufal put in quite an energy-sapping defensive shift in mid-week, so Ben Johnson could be rotated in at right-back.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Fabiański; Johnson, Kehrer, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Souček, Paquetá; Bowen, Benrahma, Antonio.
Manchester United team news
As mentioned, David de Gea saved a penalty on his last visit to the London Stadium, which is a surprise considering, including shootouts, he’s conceded 49 of the 52 he’s faced in the last seven years, saving just two.
The man who handed Brighton the spot-kick on Thursday, Luke Shaw, has been otherwise excellent at centre-back, so will continue there, chosen over Harry Maguire, with Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez sidelined.
Given their injury issues, Erik ten Hag hasn’t got a lot of options to choose from, although Christian Eriksen and Jadon Sancho could return in place of Fred and Anthony Martial respectively.
Marcus Rashford has previously scored five times against West Ham, only netting more frequently against Liverpool and Leicester.
He needs one more to become only the sixth Man United player to score 30+ in a season since 1970, joining Brian McClair, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, illustrious company.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelöf, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Sancho, Rashford.
