Leeds United vs Tottenham Hotspur match preview
Leeds United looked doomed, so will it be a day of defiance of despair at Elland Road?
Last Sunday, the Whites simply had to beat West Ham at the London Stadium, but were emphatically unable to do so.
They did take the lead; Rodrigo with a stunning volley, connecting perfectly with West McKennie’s long-throw.
However, the Hammers equalised less than 15 minutes later, before two late goals saw Leeds crumble to defeat in East London.
This means Sam Allardyce had taken just one point from three matches since being parachuted in, with Leeds now winless in eight overall.
This leaves the Yorkshire club second bottom of the table, two points from safety.
The other two components of the equation are unlikely, if not implausible, but Leeds’ destiny is certainly not in their own hands, and they actually need to win this game to stand any chance at all.
When the White were last relegated from the Premier League, smashed 4-1 by Bolton in May 2004, it took them 16 years to recover and return to the top division.
Assuming they do go down again, the millions of Leeds United supporters around the world will be hoping they aren’t in the wilderness for quite as long this time.
But all hope is not lost yet, because visitors Tottenham Hotspur haven’t won an away game in any competition since 28 January, losing seven of nine since then.
In-fact, Spurs’ most recent Premier League victory outside London came at Bournemouth way back on 29 October.
Last weekend, Ryan Mason’s men were swatted aside 3-1 by Brentford at home, despite dominating the first half and taking the lead through Harry Kane’s long-range strike.
This saw Tottenham slide down to eighth, having won just one of their last seven.
So, if Spurs are to avoid missing out on Europe for the first time since 2010, they must better Aston Villa’s result against Brighton simultaneously.
Even then, they’d only get into the Europa Conference League play-off round, which makes the prospect of no European football seem a lot more palatable doesn’t it?
Tottenham have won their last three meetings with Leeds, scoring time times, seeking four consecutive wins in this fixture for the first time ever.
Nevertheless, against a de-motivated, rudderless Spurs side, Leeds will fancy their chances of a victory, although other results may mean this isn’t enough.
Leeds United team news
Junior Firpo is back following a one-match ban so could return at left-back, displacing Pascal Struijk.
Patrick Bamford went off injured last weekend, mere moments after West Ham had equalised, with Leeds’ downfall in that defeat traced back to that double whammy
In Bamford’s absence, Rodrigo will lead the line with either Wilfried Gnonto or Crysencio Summerville coming in out-wide.
Stuart Dallas (also injured), Bamford and Rodrigo all scored in Leeds’ most-recent win over Spurs, coming in May 2021.
Predicted XI (4-5-1): Robles; Ayling, Kristensen, Wöber, Struijk; McKennie, Koch, Forshaw, Harrison, Gnonto; Rodrigo.
Tottenham Hotspur team news
Harry Kane has scored three goals in five Premier League appearance against Leeds, with this tally likely to rise.
He was joined in attack by Dejan Kuluševski, Son Heung-min and forgotten man Arnaut Danjuma against Brentford, all chosen over Richarlison.
Yves Bissouma started in midfield for the first time in three months last weekend following a knee injury.
With Cristian Romero injured and Eric Dier out of favour, Davinson Sánchez could keep his place at the back.
Predicted XI (3-5-2): Forster; Emerson, Sánchez, Lenglet; Porro, Skipp, Bissouma, Perišić; Kuluševski, Son Heung-min, Kane.
