Mexico are under enormous pressure to win this summer’s Gold Cup, so will they kick off by picking up three points in Houston?
In 2021, el Tri were beaten in the final of both the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup, both times by USA.

With Haiti and Qatar completing the Group B quartet, el Tri are favourites to top this section, but will feel it’s vitally important to make a winning start in Texas, to silence dissenting supporters on top of everything else.
Honduras meanwhile are hoping to spring a surprise in this Sunday night opener.
Los Catrachos’ sole Gold Cup title came in 1981, more-recently reaching the semi-finals on four occasions between 2005 and 2013.
La H though have not been at the best in recent years, ending World Cup qualifying rock bottom of the Octagonal table, failing to win a single game, accumulating a measly four points from 14 fixtures.
Diego Vásquez’s team qualified for this tournament by finishing above Curaçao in the Nations League, but a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Canada in their most-recent competitive outing can’t have helped confidence.
Two summers ago, Honduras’ Gold Cup campaign came to an end a the quarter-final stage, swatted aside 3-0 by Mexico at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
Since then, el Tri have also won both World Cup qualifiers against la H, prevailing 3-0 at the Azteca and then 1-0 in San Pedro Sula.
So, the tens of thousands of Mexican supporters that’ll be in attendance at NRG Stadium are likely to have a win to celebrate.

Defenders César Montes and Gerardo Arteaga, who were both sent off in the Nations League semi-final defeat to USA, have both been hit with additional suspensions.
Montes is banned for three extra games, meaning he’ll sit out the entire group phase, while Arteaga is banned for two fixtures, so can return against Qatar on 2 July in Santa Clara.
Now former Head Coach Diego Cocca deployed a back three during his brief reign, so it’ll be interesting to see if Jaime Lozano reverts back to a four.
Midfielder Sebastián Córdova withdrew from the squad due to injury on Saturday, replaced by Diego Lainez
Guillermo Ochoa will win his 138th international cap in goal, still 41 behind Andrés Guardado’s national record.
Up front, Santiago Giménez was surprisingly only on the bench for the tres a cero loss to the United States, coming on at 2-0 down, but will surely start here, chosen over Henry Martín.

Diego Vázquez’s side were last in action ten days ago, beaten by Venezuela in a friendly in DC, with the team that started that night likely to resemble this one.
Stade Brestois winger Alberth Elis is one of the familiar faces in this squad to MLS fan, and he’ll be looking to support veteran striker Jerry Bengtson, who’s the top-scorer in this squad.
